Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) will transform the city of Cairns with its multi-faceted, all-inclusive celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture between Thursday 13 July and Sunday 16 July, 2017.
This year’s theme Family Values takes cue from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ connection to country and family at the core of their cultural heritage and creative expression. The theme has been chosen to inspire Art Centre works on display at the Art Fair, as well as a collection of new photographic works by youth in the Cairns and Woorabinda communities at Tanks Arts Centre.
Opening night includes the inaugural presentation of the CIAF Art Awards, followed by a special cultural performance—a melding of two stories that remain intertwined, respected and ultimately legendary to this day.
For the past four years, CIAF has embraced Indigenous textile and fashion design with a special fashion performance curated by Grace Lillian Lee and choreographed by Fiona Wirrer-George – the calibre of which secured it a coveted position in the 2016 program of Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival. This year the CIAF Fashion Performance offering WANDAN (meaning Future) is being further enhanced in the new and atmospheric surroundings of Tanks Arts Centre.
