Announcing our first live activation for Co-MMotion: Brisbane City Council's Temporary Art Program 2018

Created by artists Anastasia Booth and Naomi Blacklock and performed by students from Brisbane State High School, Star-Crossed Rivers is a contemporary re-telling of the love story Sohni Mahiwal.

A famous love story of the Punjab, Sohni Mahiwal centres around Sohni, a heroine who longs to be with her true love who lives across the river. In order to be with him, Sohni crosses the river each night using an earthenware pot to keep her afloat. However, one night her sister-in-law replaces the pot with a vessel of unbaked clay which dissolves in the water and causes Sohni to vanish. A tale told through movement, this mesmerizing performance speaks to universal notions of love and longing.

Co-MMotion: Brisbane City Council’s Temporary Art Program 2018 will activate Brisbane in ways that attract attention and encourage people to look, listen and engage with their surrounds.

Celebrating and harnessing the city’s unique creative energy, the program provides moments of collective interest, excitement and exchange through site-responsive work. Through Co-MMotion, people+artist+place aim to support contemporary artists to engage with local communities and sites to deliver creative projects that are bold, rigorous and accessible.
