Write About Art is what happens when you put together amazing art, a group of creative Queensland students, some slightly more seasoned writers and publishers, and lock them in a room at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

Write About Art, an art magazine written by Queensland students, is about developing our next generation of art critics and writers. It is about giving our young writers the tools to explore contemporary cultural issues and about providing these opportunities for Brisbane-based and regional students to come together with professional writers and think about what art means to them and their generation.

At GoMA, the students experienced work from our own backyard and from afar. They saw exhibitions featuring designers Easton Pearson, Indigenous artist Ron Hurley, and American Impressionism and Realism, the fantastic landmark exhibition from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Students were mentored by well-known columnist John Birmingham; art writer Louise Martin-Chew; Sam Martin, Associate Lecturer in Creative Writing at the Queensland University of Technology; and Russell Storer, curator of contemporary art at the Queensland Art Gallery.

I would like to thank Eyeline Publishing, who produce Write About Art. The Queensland Government provides funding each year to Eyeline magazine under the small to medium grants program. I would also like to thank our project partner Flying Arts for coordinating the travel and accommodation for our visitors to Brisbane.

Generation Y and beyond already have a sophisticated approach to visual culture, and publications like Write About Art give them a stepping stone to hone their skills and share their ideas.
